SHOWBIZ CHRISTCHURCH was founded in 1938 as the Christchurch Operatic Society Inc., and since then has specialised in the staging of musical theatre in Christchurch, providing education and development for members and the community, and entertaining Christchurch audiences with many of the world’s top musical and performing arts shows.

The organisation is still a not-for-profit “amateur society” (registered as an incorporated society), but also has “pro/am” status as it is run a modern small business, managed and resourced to undertake large show projects as the performance rights become available, and engaging professional artistic personnel to direct, design and produce the shows.

At Showbiz our major show productions each year provide opportunities for local performers, musicians and stage crews, mainly young people, to engage in a passion and learn from senior colleagues in musical theatre productions as their careers develop. It also provides opportunities for the community of Christchurch to experience performing arts events of world class standard.
